Interest in a Houston-area user group?

I was curious how much interest there might be in a user group for the Houston, Clear Lake, or Galveston areas, and also whether there might be an IBM/HCL facility that could host events?

I’m in. There are three IBM offices in Houston I can look into. I believe there is 1 HCL office. Most of these offices are located on the left or west side of Houston, and I have no idea if that is convenient. -jgo

100% in. I’d travel for a bit, personally, since everything in Houston is 20-30 minutes away anyway, what’s another 20-30 minutes more

I’m interested and can facilitate a meeting space in one of the Houston offices (if need be). I work at IBM, as a pre-sales tech specialist based here in Houston (West).

I’m more familiar with the IBM Office @ 2 Riverway.

I also have other interested clients in the area (midtown, katy etc) who have previously asked me about a local user group. How often should we meet and what recurring day(s) of the month?

I’m kind of feeling my way through this. I think we’d have at least 6-10 people from my site who are interested, but don’t really know how a user group functions. Mostly I was jealous seeing other user group meetups and wish there were some in our area.

A few points on User Groups… my experience in relation to events in general.

  1. Do not schedule an event/UG on or near a holiday.
  2. Do schedule an event 6 weeks out to allow interested parties to plan accordingly.
  3. Do advertise on the BigFix forums.
  4. Do inform a seller to make sure that they can tell people about it.
  5. Do allow customers to present and maybe allow a few bigfixers.
  6. Get @gsarai to find some IBM office space. I hear he is a kind host and has a wonderful singing voice.
  7. Do not schedule a User group on a Monday or Friday.

I also heard from M Phinick that the HCL office is not ideal for parties greater than 15. I do see ample space at either of the left/west IBM offices.

Outside of those items, I here Houston is lovely in July. There is a butterfly center, a space center, snakes, an up and coming local music scene and their are many other lovely sites to see if someone is traveling in from a northern state that looks like a mitten.

If Houston is less convenient, then perhaps maybe any other city in Texas?

Let me know how I can help. I am willing. Later.

@JasonWalker - perhaps it is time to create a group @ community.ibm.com/security for a Houston area user group?
I can create the subgroup and be the admin or you can request one.
Let me know how I can assist.

@JasonWalker

  1. Join/register for the community: IBM Security Community - IBM Security Community
  2. Menu Bar-Drop Down Participate
  3. Highlight Get Involved
  4. Click lead a local user group
  5. Apply Today

LMK if this works.
Later,

BTW … this was is not sarcastic at least not knowingly on this side.

The community site is so new that I had not even conceived that a user could self-create a local group.
Yay!

If you would like we could host a getting started call with a few BigFixers that have launched user groups in the past. We could set dates, brainstorm on potential sessions.

Hey, what’s up @jgo and @JasonWalker! I would actually be interested in what launching a user group entails as well. I’m not aware of anything in the Jackson, MS area…or anything in Mississippi for that matter.

@DTMitchell - I can check on that region for you. I would suggest you create a new POST measuring the interest from the forum members. I am more than willing to support.
