BigFix Excel Connector

(imported comment written by manonstreet91)

Lee,

Thanks for the (quick) reply. If I use the query definition “All Computer Groups”, it sometimes returns data really quickly, other times it errors out in the same manner. The actual Web Reports interface using the same credentials is very responsive, so I do not believe it to be a server side issue. Doing almost any other action (running other query definitions, trying to load up the BES properties, etc…), hangs for a long while, then returns the error. I’m not sure if it’s related / typical, but clicking the Execute Query Wizard also takes a while before displaying.

I am running Windows 7 SP 1 x64 and Excel 2010 x64. I’ve seen some notes for previous versions about Excel x64 not being supported, perhaps that’s the issue. Any ideas on what to try next?

manonstreet,

I don’t recognize the symptom of the problem. Maybe you can help me test my using the Session Relevance Tester (http://forum.bigfix.com/viewtopic.php?id=3026) which can issue SOAP queries against Web Reports. This would be the same interface that the Excel Connector uses.

Anytime you load up a report/query in the Excel Connector, you can click on “Show Relevance Code” to copy the statement for testing in the Session Relevance Tester.

When I get back from my travels end of this week, I would be happy to help debug if we cannot make head way. Please contact me via email.

Hello,

we have problem with importing column ‘LastReportTime’.

Column is imported, but we receive error:

Office 2003 (SP3):

Processing error: Application Microsoft Office cannot use number format.

Office 2007 :

Processing error: Cannot set up property NumberFormat of class Range.

We using MS Office in Czech language

Thank for any suggestion

Hello Jiri,

The Excel Connector converts the “Last Report Time” string property to a format that looks like this:

yyyy/mm/dd hh:mm AM/PM

It then tells Excel to format the data as a Date/Time. Looks like it is making a mess of it in your case. I wonder if it has to do with language version.

Can you try selecting the cells and change the Format?

Hello Lee,

Thank you for suggestion

I suppose that problem is with clock format.

Excel Connector use 12-hour format, but we use 24-hour format.

I tested changing regional format

(WinXP: control panel->Regional and Language options->Standards and formats)

When I use Czech formats, which is usual for our PCs, I receive error,

but when I use English(United States), I receive result without error

Jiri,

Thanks for narrowing it down, this helps me to find a solution when I update the software.

Lee Wei,

I’m having issue with the installation of the latest Excel connector. (3.3.1 with an msi labeled as 3.3.2).

It is freshly installed on Win7(x64) on top of an Office Professional Plus 2007 (running as a KVM virtual machine, if this may have any relevance in the case).

I ensured to have the latest system and application patches and (I think) I followed all the installation instructions correctly, including the full 4 .NET Framework.

The installation reports a correct installation but when I open Excel I receive the popup as in the attached picture.

The full diagnostic text is appended, along with the Add-in Express installation log files.

I made various attempts, all the times with the same results.

Any suggestion on what can I do to fix the issue?

Thanks for help.

Lee Wei,

I found the reson of the problem.

I was able to narrow down the issue to a “Culture” related setting in my OS, that was set to Italian.

If this is not addessed in the code (http://www.add-in-express.com/forum/read.php?FID=5&TID=10278), changing the OS regional settings can solve the problem.

Just sharing the info here for anyone that may get similar messages, and for your awareness.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for reporting this.

Yes it would be a bug since the Excel Connector is treating the Action Status as a string when it should be an object.

I will have to fix the code and the only way I can see you working around this would be to extract the data and filter out in Excel in the mean time.

Lee Wei

(imported comment written by SystemAdmin)

Hi Lee,

Thanks for the quick response. The extract and filter in Excel is exactly what I am doing  Little issues like this in such a great tool are minor. Without this tool, it would not be so easy to get the data I need.

On a side question, this tool seems to be pulling data for deleted records (IsDeleted = 1), is that correct? If so, is there a way to filter them out as I have not seen one yet?

Thanks.

Martin,

I found out that the default inspector “bes actions” will return member actions for Multi-Action Group (MAG).

To return the actions as would be exactly the same as from the Console, we can use the inspector “top level bes actions”.

What do you guys think?

Of course, it would be nice to have a check box, but I will have to think about the UI…

  • Changed name to IBM Endpoint Manager (IEM) Excel Connector

  • Fixed error with searching for action status using the “Results of BES Action” object

Hi Lee

The excel connector is a great add-in for excel but is it possible to change the way the excel connector uses the whose statement for the bes of action? When I use the Query Wizard to build a report for BES Actions the last part of the relevance is

of results
whose(((ID of Action of it=190049)))
of bes actions

Reason I ask is that this piece of relevance could take a long time to return the results depending on how much data is returning. Which causes a heavy load on the Web report server.

If I make a slight change to the relevance to look like this

of results
of bes actions whose(((ID of it=190049)))

the results return back significantly faster than the previous statement.

I’ve used the Relevance editor to make this change and it works but I can’t save the changes and the format is no longer the same. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Lee,

I am not able to install the connector. I first tried installing version 3.3.1 with a normal user account trought the .msi installer. The GUI didn´t show any errors. I then found out that there was a newer version so I decided to uninstall version 3.3.1 through control panel and then rebooted the computer. Then I installed the most recent 3.3.3 version and installed it running the setup.exe file through right click “run as” as recomended in your instructions.
