I would like to dedicate 1 machine to act as the WOL packet forwarder oppose to dedicating a machine on each respective subnet. There are approximately 40 subnets, therefore I would have to dedicate 40 machines as a forwarder. Would this be possible and is this the best practice?

If you are using Schedule WoL wizard to wake up computers, WoL packet is sent out using 2 methods: standard broadcast WoL from WoL forwarder, and subnet directed broadcast from IEM server.
The standard WoL broadcast requires a WoL forwarder computer for each subnet, but it doesn’t require additional network setup. WoL forwarder can be any machine in the subnet, it doesn’t need to dedicated to a single machine, as long as there’s at least 1 online forwarder machine in a submet.
Subnet directed broadcast WoL is sent out from IEM server to corresponding subnet. There’s no need for forwarder machine if you consider this method. But you need to make sure router configuration allow forwarding of the broadcast packet from IEM server to all subnets.
The latter method is not available in “Send WoL Request” right click menu item and WoL SOAP API.

In our environment we automatically designate all endpoints as wake on lan forwarders. We typically designate at least 1 “Last Man Standing” per subnet, but in most cases this is not required if waking machines during normal business hours since there should be at least 1 computer per subnet awake.
