Windows Computername Character Limit

(imported topic written by nberger91)

Why is IEM client still limiting the ‘computername’ to the old Windows NetBIOS 15 character limit ?

For anyone else interested in this, I’ve opened an RFE to have the Windows Computer Name property length extended.

We use BigFix as one of the sources of data exported to an Enterprise CMDB. We’ve begun to notice duplication of records because another system (VMware) has reported the correct Computer Name for a Windows computer, but BigFix only reports the first 15 characters of the Computer Name.

We have gotten rid of NetBIOS in our Environment so the technical limit of 15 characters is also gone. I’d like to encourage the developers to adjust the Windows Client to report the actual (and correct) Computer Name.

The issue is thats the name the call we make into the OS gives us. There may be a newer call we can do for sure but we’d have to look at it. More than likely the existing call will remain the same and a new inspector would be added.
