What do you do for Power Management in your environment?

Hey everyone — I’ve been tasked with figuring out green power settings for our environment (about 1300 Windows and 800 Mac desktops). I’ve been focusing mostly on fully shutting off computers, but have found that to be a somewhat difficult pitch. In my research, I came across PSU’s setup (http://clc.its.psu.edu/ItAdminSupport/SysMan/PowerManagement), which I’m guessing @jgstew had a hand in setting up. There’s a nifty (if perhaps outdated) chart that seems to say that the difference between putting computers into standby and shutting them off is negligible. This has me rethinking my approach.

I’m very interested to hear what folks on the forum are doing. If you are shutting down, do you have issues with users losing unsaved documents? That’s the main concern here (even with users allowed to cancel the scheduled shutdowns). If you’re using the Force Standby when a User is idle (or not logged in) approach, have you found that to be reliable? Anecdotally I feel like I see more Help Desk tickets about computers not being able to wake from standby than I’d like in order to feel comfortable relying on it.

We’re stil in the early phases and haven’t moved past shutting down our pilot users between 7PM Friday and 7AM Monday, so I’m open to any/all options. Thanks!
