Wake on LAN erratic

(imported topic written by WillMay)

Hi,

We started using the Sheduled Wakeup Wizard a couple months ago to do nighttime patching. The TEM server since that time was upgraded from version 8 to 9. Now we are seeing machines turn on at random times without any command from the WOL scheduler. I deleted all our TEM WOL scheduled wakeups and the computers are still waking up. We turned on the WOL Medic but there is no indication in the logs of what is happening. Does anyone have any advice or clue to help me wrangle in this WOL component of TEM?

Thanks,

Will

Do these machines have “Scheduled wake from standby” not just “Scheduled wake on LAN”?

“Scheduled wake from standby” uses a scheduled task to wake the computer, so it does not use the WOL Medic. These “Scheduled wake from standby” tasks have to be deleted from the endpoint to stop it from waking.

Scheduled Wake On LAN. There are no wake from standby tasks on the computers. Thanks for replying, though. Any other ideas?

There are utilities you can run on a system that is waking up at odd times to see what is sending it the WoL packets:

If it is being done by the wake on lan medic, you can have the system powered up, run these utilities, and at the scheduled time you will see many WoL packets hit the system. You can also test it by doing the right click and select “Send WoL Request” in the console to see what that does. You may find that the systems are not being awoken by wake on LAN. I would also check the event logs for wake up events and reasons.

If the wake ups are being done by BigFix, then you should see multiple WoL packets hit the system from many peers.
