Wake-on address and WOL broadcasts

(imported topic written by SystemAdmin)

Hi All,

I noticed a device, on the console, as having a wake-on address as “10.56.15.255 aa-bb-cc-dd-ee-ff”.

Now 10.56.15.255 is the broadcast address of our /20 network (largish network space).

Would a “Send a wake-on-lan” request via the console to that device, well, send a UDP broadcast to that broadcast address?

If so, how can I direct a WOL request specifically to that host via the console? (if at all)

Also recently, we seeing a flood of UDP broadcasts (around 56 pps) from quite a few individual PCs to that broadcast address (with BESWol payload, so we assuming WOL is responsible somewhere), could this have been caused by issuing a “Send wake-on-lan” via console or something else sinister may have gone wrong (eg with the lastmanstanding device)?

My apologies for the multiple questions on the topic but hopefully someone would be able to shed some light.

cheers

Peter
