Vista and Patches

(imported topic written by SystemAdmin)

After applying MS07-027 via BigFix to our Vista machines, all of our PCs displayed the following message:

Windows Update

Restart your computer to finish installing important updates

Windows can’t update important files and services while the system is using them. Make sure to save your files before restarting

Remind me in 10 Minutes

Restart Now Postpone

Is this normal behavior for Vista PCs after applying Microsoft patches with BigFix? I have attached a screenshot.

Thanks!

Scott

Scott,

This message looks to me to be un-related to BES and possibly a result of Windows Update being turned on on these machines. It could be the case that the BES Client and Windows Update were trying to patch at the same time. Can you confirm whether or not Windows Update is set to automatically download and install updates on these computers? I can tell you that we did not see this behavior during the course of our Patch Tuesday testing.

Thanks,

Anne Young

The machines are default setting for Windows Update which is set to automatic, but the messages appeared after BigFix patched the machine. The time in the BF logs match the time of the message on each machine. Thanks for the reply, I will change from automatic and will continue to monitor the situation.

Thanks,

Scott

Hey Scott,

The Vista security updates are actually .MSU files, they cannot be executed. When the patch is run manually, Vista launches wusa.exe, the Windows Update Stand-alone Installer, to apply the update. The BigFix action script does the same, launching wusa.exe with the /quiet and /norestart switches to install the update. So, after the patch is installed, Vista will display the reboot reminder message after some time has passed.

More information about wusa.exe can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934307

BigFix is actively investigating this new patch process, we may be able to provide some content to help configure Vista to disable the reminders and other messages, but we’re not sure if that’s possible yet, so stay tuned.
