Update 3087985 (MS15-093) requires an installation sequence for users of Internet Explorer versions 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11

The download page for MS15-093 provides two KBs: KB3078071 and KB3087985, which must be run in sequence. You must first install KB3078071 before installing KB3087985. KB3078071 was also released in MS15-079 last August 11, 2015, so you might already have this KB installed.

Refer to the Installation section, for the steps to install KB3087985.

Installation

  • If you installed KB3078071 when it was released in MS15-079 last August 11, 2015, apply the Fixlet for KB3087985.
  • If you have not yet installed KB3078071, you must do the installation in the following sequence:
  1. Apply the Fixlet for KB3078071, then restart the computer to make the Fixlet for KB3087985 relevant.
  2. Apply the Fixlet for KB3087985.

The KBs in MS15-065 had a similar requirement to be installed in order. But the use of fixlets to apply the KBs slowed the patching process considerably with the reboot between each fixlet application plus waiting for the next fixlet to become relevant. When I had a system sensitive to multiple reboots, I skipped using fixlets, and instead manually ran the Microsoft Update Standalone Packages in order with one reboot at the end. Looks like I’ll have to do the same for this bulletin too.

This is Yunfei from the BigFix Windows Patching team, sorry for replying this late. I would like to update you that discussions and actions have been taking place in the content dev team in order to enhance our user experience in similar multi-patch installations.

We will try to streamline the patch installations whenever possible, by e.g. combining several patches into a single Fixlet to ensure their installation sequence and minimize the number of reboots.

However, when there are situations where we have to release multiple Fixlets, there is also a best practice to follow: When creating baselines, add all Fixlets (relevant and non-relevant) under a bulletin; when taking actions, under the “Execution” tab, tick “Reapply this action while relevant, waiting X minutes”. The retries will help to install the multiple KBs in their expected sequence.
