Unmanaged Assets - Unable to add to BES Console

(imported topic written by Raju91)

Hi,

I would like to add unamanaged assets on to BES Console. I am using the XMLupdate to upload the sample.xml data into the bes database, but I get the following error. I am installing BES 7.0 with SQL 2005 as the database.

has anyone faced this problem. How do I resolve this?

Hi Raju,

Are you trying to get the unmanaged assets working through the manual Nessus import? Or the import that occurs automatically through the Asset Discovery Fixlet site (based on NMAP)?

Hi Ben,

I am trying a Manual import using the XMLUpdate.exe tool.

Hi Raju,

We updated the Unmanaged Asset Import tools in our Fixlet sites for 7.0, but we believed that this particular tool was not being used because it was built for Nessus, and the Nessus product-line has been discontinued.

Are you using this for Nessus imports or did you create a custom importing tool?

I will check to see if we can provide to you an updated tool…

Ben,

I also use this tool to import a custom xml file we create from our McAfee ePo rogue agent data. Does this mean the XMLupdate tool will not be updated to work with 7.0? If so, do you have some documentation on the unmanaged asset database table(s) so we can create our own import tool? We haven’t upgraded to 7.0 yet, are there new import tools that will help accomplish what we are doing?

Hi Ben,

I am trying to use the BES for the asset management and would like to have the details for Printers, routers, etc. How do I import those details into the BES without using tools like Nessus, etc?

Hi Raju,

The BES Asset Discovery site is easiest way to find information about IP connected devices… It is pretty easy to set up and you can make it run distributed automated scans. Check out:

http://support.bigfix.com/bes/sites/assetdiscovery.html

Talk to your sales representative for more details about getting access to this site.

dgibson/raju, we will update the xmlupdate tool for 7.0 soon… I am glad to hear that you guys have found good uses for some of the advanced unmanaged asset capabilities of BES.

Has this tool been updated for version 7?

Hi BFnoob,

Do you mean does Asset Discovery work for Windows 7? If so, then I believe the answer is yes. Asset Discovery allows scanpoints on Win7 and it will detect Win7 computers… (Also, it will work with all BigFix versions if that was what you were asking).
