I’m interested in the discovery of unmanaged assets. What do I need to get this in Bigfix?
Thanks,
Shawn

Hi Shawn,
You need to get the “BES Asset Discovery” Fixlet site to use the Unmanaged Asset. You should contact your sales representative for information about licensing.
Here is more information about the site once you get it installed:

Also, ask your sales representative for the datasheet, which has some good information too.

What is the ballpark price for this? The sales guy I talked to said it was going to cost us around $**** for our 3700 node system. That’s a little much, IMO, just to have a better way to deploy the bes client. (the bes client deploy tool is troublesome).

Hi Shawn,
We had to edit your post to remove pricing information as consistent with the forum policies. I left the post but put 4 "*"s in its place (and for the sake of full disclosure, the price Shawn listed did not have 4 digits).
As a note, the BES Asset Discovery site will do more than just help with BES Client deployment. It will help identify any network device you have on your network with an IP address including printers, routers, switches, computers, handhelds, etc. We have customers using it for security reasons to identify rogue wireless devices, we have customers who use it for inventory of network devices, we have customers using it to ensure 100% BES Agent compliance, and so on…
Note also that BES Asset Discovery comes bundled in certain packages that BigFix offers and depending on what you have previously purchased the price will vary as you upgrade to different bundles (and there are other solutions in the bundles). You should double-check with the salesperson to see if they quoted you a price that includes other solutions.

Hi,
Thanks Ben. I’ll double check with the sales person, and clarify what I want and what I have already. Sorry for posting the approximate price I was given!
I’ll see if some of the other features of Asset Discovery could potentially be useful to us.
Thanks,
Shawn

I’ve been using nmap scanning to discover unmanaged assets across my network. I can now see over 500 unmanaged assets listed but is that all I can do is view?? Is there no way I can modify their description/name/Location/link to IP etc and add them into BigFig as a non-client asset? I think it would be great to be able to do more with Unmanaged assets! Also wondering if there is plans to provide SNMP integration? A lot of these “unmanaged assets” support snmp which is another method of pulling information from the devices as the OS/MAC lookup never seems to be very accurate!

Just to fill out my post a little bit more:
What would be ideal is that once the unmanaged device has made it into the unmanaged assets tab I would like to be able to modify the entry somewhat such as adding/changing the device name and adding a description. These changes should be able to be tied to the IP address of the device. In this way I can begin to use BigFix as a true network management/monitoring tool which would be great given our very distributed nature. There are a lot of devices being added/taken away to/from the network and it’s nearly impossible to keep track of manually. Any documentation is usually out of date as soon as it is written! Using BigFix in this way would allow my to have up to date knowledge of nearly all device connected to my network. So the next time I’m asked, what are all the devices we have in location X I can just print out a report!

Hey j2johnson,
You can’t edit the predefined fields, but what you can do is add “keywords” and “notes” which will be tied to the device in the console. You can double-click on a device to edit these or you can right-click and edit keywords…
I think this will accomplish what you are looking for… for instance, you can go through and tag all the devices as trusted or untrusted and add notes about what they are…
