SQL Express 2005 to SQL Express 2008 R2 upgrade

I have a small IEM setup in a lab and I just upgraded from 9.1.1229 to 9.2.3 (on Windows 2008 R2 OS). I have been using the included SQL Express 2005. I see that 9.2.5 and .6 now require SQL 2008 R2 or better (those upgrade fixlets are not relevant). I’d rather not spend the money for a full SQL Server.

Will IEM choke if I download the MS SQL Express 2008 R2 (x86) and use it to upgrade my existing Express 2005? I suppose I simply need to stop all the IEM services first.

If I do this then I think I’ll be able to use the Upgrade Fixlets for 9.2.5 or 9.2.6.

Thoughts anyone?

Stop your bes services, backup your database, run the MSSQL upgrade gui, the restart bes services.
The MSSQL upgrade should not upset bes once it has been done provided everything is stopped whilst you do it.

But backup to be sure  I tend to backup everything as a file and data backup…just in case

If it is running in a VM, then turn it off, snapshot it, give it a go, and restore from snapshot if it doesn’t work.

Yes, it is a VM and I did exactly that. The upgrade to SQL 2008 R2 Express worked just fine, thanks everyone. However, I had to manually remove the SWL Server Mangement Studio version I had installed after IEM, in order to upgrade to 2008 R2 Express Mgt Studio from this same package. That all worked just fine also.
