Saving and closing open files with bigfix

(imported topic written by agudger91)

Hi All

I am trying to save and close a document using the bigfix task under power management.

When I run the job bigfix creates the specified folder on C: to where it should be saving any open files but the folder remains empty, even after a successful execution of the job.

i have tried with ms word 2003, notepad, word pad and outlook 2007 files, none of which work.

Could this be a compatibility error with windows 7 ?

I have thought about writing a script and just getting bigfix to run this, but would rather use the built in function.

Hi agrudger,

Is the screen locked when you try this?

Hi Ben

Thanks for the reply, the screen is not locked.

I have been opening documents on the screen, then running the save and close task on the specific client.

the job runs succesfully and shows complete in bigfix, however the open documents do not close and when i navigate to the c:\BESAppSave folder it does not contain any saved versions of the open documents.

we are running win7 x64 with word, excel 2003, but as stated i have also tried this with notepad and wordpad with no sucess.

we are running Bes client 8.0.627.0, Bes server 8.0.627.0

Thanks agudger… I am going to check whether these are mistakenly relevant on x64 and Win7 systems…

Hi,

I would like to open discussions backup on this one as i am currently looking to power off any machine left on after 9pm at night, however in the case where a user has left applications open on their pc I would like to save and close these before shutting the pc down.

Using the provided Save & Close fixlet im getting a “Failed” message on the last step of the job.

Below is the extract from the bigfix client log

Command failed (Process creation failed) runhidden besshutapp.exe “C:\Program Files (x86)\BigFix Enterprise\BES Client__BESData\actionsite\shutapp.ini” (fixlet 13511)

At 17:27:48 +0100 -

ActionLogMessage: (action 13511 ) ending action

I have looked in the C:\Program Files (x86)… and can locate the .ini file

Any help \ suggestions greatly appreciated

Did you create a custom copy of the Fixlet?

Try adding the full path to besshutapp.exe in your action instead:

runhidden “{pathname of client folder of site “bespowermanagement”}\besshutapp.exe”

Hi Ben,

Thankyou for the advise, i have provided the full path in the fixlet and now the besshutapp.exe appears to work correctly.

To test this I use the default save location for any open docs (C:\BESAppSave) I then open a new word doc with some text in but do not save it.

I set an offer time of 2 mins and fire the job off, the offer expires and then the pc shuts down.

The final problem I have is when I reboot the pc to check inside the C:\BESAppSave folder it is empty.

the job reports back as completed so i am unsure as to what could be causing the doc not to save.

I have not altered any of the action script other than the path for the besshutapp.exe.
