Renaming a single server BES implementation

(imported topic written by louspag91)

Our DEV BES server needs to be renamed and I was wondering if BigFix supports this. The SQL DB is local along with all other BES functions. We may have one relay that we need to deal with but nothing else beyond this.

Is renaming the primary & only BES Server supported or should we destroy and rebuild it?

Thanks

How do your clients/relays access the BES server? Do they use a DNS alias? If so, migration is fairly easy. I just completed a few weekends ago migrating to brand new hardware, and the clients didn’t notice a thing. We’re using an alias however…

I’d be nervous about an in-place rename though.

This is a dev environment, very few clients and ip override is being used so from a client prospective I’m not anticipating too many problems. I’m more concerned with the bigfix server and the sql db for it. So if we rename the server will bigfix break?

What specifically are you renaming? And what does your masthead.afxm file have listed as your server’s name?

well our dev BES server is currently named usfkl21db47 and we need to rename it to something else in-line with the new standards. The masthead file contains usfkl21db47.mgd.mrshmc.com. So my question is can we simply rename it or do we need to rebuild the server and reinstall BigFix?

If we rename it can a new masthead be generated with the new server name? or would the proper procedure be

to uninstall BigFix, rename the server, then reinstall BigFix which would re-create the new masthead file.

Thanks

Hi louspag,

You can rename the server if you want, but unfortunately, you can’t change the DNS name in the masthead without getting a new masthead…

So if you can keep the DNS the same: usfkl21db47.mgd.mrshmc.com then you have no issues… but if that is the part that needs to change, then you will need to request a new license from BigFix and redeploy.
