I’d like to start using Power Management to set power profiles on my user machines and am questioning standby vs hibernation. I want to set the machine to go into standby after 20 minutes, and then hibernate if no activity after 2 hours. Obviously the Standby rule will kick in first. If the machine is already in Standby, will the Hibernate rule be able to apply itself?
Yes, a Windows computer can be set with both standby and hibernate. After the computer enters standby mode, it can still go into the hibernation mode. You can use the Power Profile Wizard to configure these settings.
There is a Task to force computers into Hibernation immediately. In that case, the computers have to be on (not standby) to receive the command.
You might want to grab a power meter and check the power usage in standby and in hibernation… Some of the new computers I have seen have basically the same power usage with off, hibernation, and system standby (1-3 watts). If this is true on your systems, then I would say that you should probably go with standby and ignore hibernation to simplify your life.
