Not sure if anybody else has this need but ever since the change in licensing models and products on Oracle side, we are finding ourselves in need to manage newer Java products. Unfortunately, they seem to have adopted all the name JDK even though the free & paid for do come with completely separate versions, support timelines, etc… Anyway, submitted RFEs for JDK Free versions (CON-I-99) & JDK Paid versions (CON-I-100) to be added to “Updates for Windows Applications Extended”, if you agree please vote. Thank you.
@ageorgiev - Fixlet ID 7100601 in Updates for Windows Applications Exteneded.updates Oracle Java SE Development Kit 21 to v21.0.5.0 on Windows 64-bit OS. There are also Temurin and Liberica JDK updates here as well.
I don’t see any JDK updates in the Windows Applications Middleware site.
@itsmpro92, yes, those are only one of the 2 RFEs - the free versions of JDK. We would like to close the gap and get the JDK for ver. 8 & 11, which is what seems to have been added to the Linux Middleware site.
Oracle JDK 8 and 11 require a login to download, as do several things in the “Linux Middleware” site. The Fixlets in that site require manual caching for the downloads…would that be useful for you if we did the same with the Windows Extended site? If we offered JDK 8 / JDK 11 fixlets but required manually caching the downloads on your root server?
@JasonWalker, we would take it anywhere, just need to be able to patch it and close the last gap. I initially submitted it as Content for Extended side but per discussions with PM, I did also submit it for Patches for Windows/Updates to Windows applications (standard) route too: BFPTCH-I-297
Because of the Oracle licensing issues, my org wound up (mostly) relying on variations of OpenJDK. Amazon Coretto inside AWS, MS’ OpenJDK on Windows, etc.
I’m pretty sure at this point that we only have Oracle Java on systems running “Oracle” branded OS with support contracts. (Which was their goal, of course.)
Unless I am missing something, as everyone stated, HCL cannot have direct downloads to the installers. Due to licensing requirements by Oracle, you have to download manually and cache to your BigFix server. HCL does provide fixlets that work, once you have done that.
There is nothing that can be done to make that better, unless you can get Oracle to change their licensing requirements
I think that what @ageorgiev is looking for is HCL provided content for the Windows versions of the JDKs, even though they will require manual caching. It seems like the Updates for WIndows Applications Middleware owuld be a good candidate for this content.
Boyd answered it - Oracle upgrades (across all versions and OS) require manual caching, so I am not expecting anything different and perfectly fine with manual caching. What we are missing is the actual fixlets for JDK8 & JDK11 for Windows, even those fixlets for JDK8 & JDK11 for Linux are being offered already (lack of parity). These seem to be the only remaining lapses of the overall patch support of Java left as newer Java versions are supported by “Updates by Windows Applications Extended” too.
Ahh! Now I understand… I would agree, having fixlets forJDK really should be available along with existing JRE.
Luckily we have been able to push Java updates to our application and server owners, and largely have not had to deal with Java updates or I would have been asking for fixlets as well
