OSX - Check for running background process

Hello all,

Please forgive me for I am new to this world.

Starting small, I’ll like to check some Mac’s to see if there are certain background process running. i.e. the ones I see in Activity Monitor. For now all I need to know is if a certain process is running. a True/False or a Yes/No is fine.

I’ve spent a good few hours on here and looking through guides, but with no luck. Loads of stuff about checking Windows background processes.

If you can recommend some good reading material also I’d be very grateful.
