Os deployment takes a very long time , than blank black screen

(imported topic written by newage91)

Hi

I am preparing an OS deployment configuration for customer POC.

I got all prerequisites to work.

When I issue the re-image command to a computer (Windows XP sp3 on VMWARE esx) , I get the deployment to run.

It takes more than 30 minutes for the first restart and do the re-image process.

Once its completed (takes few hours to complete…) , its restarts boot what seems to be a Windows 7 boot process.

The boot process end with a blank black screen (only mouse pointer is visable, crtl-alt-del doesnt work).

I waited a long time (*many hours) to see additional progress , there was none.

In BES console - the post re-image process was completed !

How should I proceed ?

BES server is stand alone Windows 2003 32 VM , on the same ESX .

Hi,

that sounds like MDT is having a problem… can you post some more details about the image you’re deploying? What was it captured from, what type of licensing, did you enter a key?

thanks,

Jack

Hi newage, just a few questions:

  1. If you restart the computer, does it still have the black screen problem?

  2. Did you supply the appropriate graphics drivers in the re-image? These would be supplied by adding them to the BFDriverRepository$ share, and setting the share path on the re-image page.

  3. Can you remote into the machine to retrieve log files? They could be in a number of possible locations:

  • C:\MININT

  • C:\Windows\Temp\DeploymentLogs

  • \DeploymentLogs

Thanks!

HI

The captured image is Windows 7 32 bit enterprise edition, Clean (installed ,joined domain, installed Bigfix client , captured ).

License was not entered (30 day grace)

When I reset the re-imaged machine into safe mode , it say installation cannot complete in safemode , and restarts…

It doens seem to be a display issue , since VMWARE display card is detected in Windows 7 as VGA…

Attached are OSDLOGS from c:\MININT\SMSOSD

Hi,

i had same issue, the problem you describe happening due Video card issue, by default when you install Windows XP under VMWare ESX he allocated 4Mb Video Ram, this not enough for Windows 7, while if you build new Windows 7 virtual machine VMWare allocated 8Mb of Video ram.

Conclusion:

While the virtual machine still Windows XP, shutdown the virtual machine and reconfigure the Video adapter from 4Mb to 16Mb.
