Office 2000 Professional patches failing

(imported topic written by mellis200091)

Hello,

I am having trouble getting my office patches to install correctly. I have followed all of the instructions for this kb article: http://support.bigfix.com/cgi-bin/kbdirect.pl?id=129 and I have established the null session share as illustrated in this kb article: http://support.bigfix.com/bes/misc/null_session_share.html but I am still having trouble making the patch work properly.

We are implementing the “network install” method of patching Office and have set up the assignment for Office accordingly. I have tested that my null session share is setup correctly by running a cmd.exe task in BES, and being able to write to the share where the office files live, but I am still not getting the patches to install correctly.

Here is the output of one of my patches that I am trying to install:

MS06-012: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution - Outlook 2000 - Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 (Network Install)

Sorry for the long information, but I wanted you all to see that the steps are completing properly, just the end result is coming up failed.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can try?

Thanks,

Hi Mike,

It is hard to say for sure… It looks like your null session shares are setup properly, but the patch might just be failing… here is some more info:

http://support.bigfix.com/cgi-bin/kbdirect.pl?id=68

You might try just running the patch manually and see if it works.

I’ve been looking at the various machines that the patches are failing on, and what I seem to be seeing is an old reference to the initial installation location. In the registry location HKEY_Classes_Root\Installer\Products\904010001E872D116BF00006799C897E\SourceList\Net there is a registry setting “1”, that references the original location of the setup files. For these computers that setting is set to “F:\Office 2000 Disk #1”, and for us, the F drive mapping doesn’t contain that information anymore, as well as the subfolder name being changed to office2k.

I have tested changing that to our current location for the Office 2000 files, and the patches then work. I’m now working on a fixlet or task that will allow me to import a registry key to change this value to the one I need. Any help on doing this would be great!

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

In the console, go to Wizards > Windows Registry Wizard, and it should make your life easy…

I’ve sent my registry fix for Office 2000, and I am now in business in patching my office installations!
