Is there another way to recover or set new password for the site admin of bigfix I don’t have the admin password anymore and I read you have to reinstall you lose the site credential files or password, you will need to generate another set of site credentials and do a complete reinstall of the BigFix system. There has to be another way.
The BigFix master private key (license.pvk) allows you to add new operators, issue any new actions, and other powerful activities in your BigFix deployment. Like other private key systems, the power resides in the key file itself (+ the password).
BigFix doesn’t keep a copy of the key (you generate it yourself and we never see it) and we don’t keep any backdoors into BigFix (if we did, I would expect our customers to be very angry with us) and it would be unacceptable from a security standpoint.
Our standard recommendation is that you keep a secure copy of the key/password so it can be retrieved in the event of a problem… Any hope that the admin that set up the system followed this recommendation in some location?
The process of switching private keys is analagous to what would happen if you lost a master key to a building… You need to create a new master key and change all the locks… In the case of BigFix, the nice thing is that after you have a new master key (which you would install on a server), you can issue an action to your agents (using your master operator credentials, publisher.pvk, which it sounds like you still have) to tell your agents to switch mastheads to the new deployment…
It certainly isn’t a trivial task, but it should be significantly easier than initial deployment… you can engage our services team to work through the process with you if you would like…
