MS16-048 supersedes a Win7 patch even though it doesn't apply to Win7

According to the BigFix console, patch MS16-014 KB3126593 for Windows 7 sp1 x64 has been superseded by MS16-048.

Microsoft did not release a MS16-048 patch for Windows 7, and there’s no fixlet in the Patches for Windows site for that bulletin that applies to Windows 7.

Please check whether MS16-014 KB3126593 is still a valid patch for Win7.

Hi Wally,

Thank you for reporting! The patches are indeed superseded, but by MS16-044 instead of MS16-048. This will be corrected and published soon.

Regards,
Jason

Team,

We are still not seeing MS16-014 / KB3126593 as superseded in our console. (Fixlet IDs 1601437, 1601437)

How can we have our console updated to reflect this?

Also, is there any mechanism/process to verify what IBM has as superseded is what we see as superseded in our console?

Thanks.

Jim Donlin

Hi Jim,

About this KB3126593, although Microsoft Catalog says it is superseded by KB3146706, but we receive customer report saying that the latter (KB3146706) is not actually applicable while the former (KB3126593) is. Therefore we deemed the supersedence information not accurate and un-superseded KB3126593. In short, what you are seeing is up-to-date and correct. Please feel free to try this and come back if you observe otherwise.

As for verification, you can always look out for notification at https://forum.bigfix.com/c/release-announcements. For example, the latest site version is 2729 as we speak, all you need to do then is to check if your site is at that version.

Thank you Jason.

I already receive the announcements.

What was Microsoft’s response to the discrepancy?

Thanks.

Jim

Hi Jim,

Although we had customer report on this, our in-house test beds did not exhibit the same behaviour, i.e., we could not reproduce this on our own. Therefore we could not have reported this to Microsoft.

Thanks,
Jason
