We are looking to completely shut down our existing BigFix installation, and bring up a new instance on a new server. As a result we need our clients to register with a new primary server. How would we go about doing this? Do we have to uninstall and reinstall the clients? Is there a fixlet we could run to force them to unregister with the current sever and re-register with the new one?
Do you want to migrate your server data to the new server or do you want to start from scratch and just have an easy way to move the clients to the new (clean/fresh) server?
If you are doing the former follow this KB article:
we should migrate our BES server to a newer hardware. We don’t need to migrate server data but we want to use the same license (we use DNS name for the client connection and the new hardware will have the same DNS name).
Must the BES server be the same version (8.0) or can we use a newer BES server version (8.1) if we mantain the same masthead?
I am doing this right now and have migrated hardware twice before.
You need to go to the same version of BES because of database version. If you want to go to the newer version you will need to upgrade first on the old hardware then restore it or install the same version on the new hardware then upgrade. It is best to keep the hardware migration and upgrade as 2 separate tasks. You can use your existing license, when you import your masthead in you may have a DNS mismatch error but it will be resolved once you apply the correct DNS record to your new server.
If you have lots of console operators then you will want to migrate those users over with the SQL script, if you have only a few then it maybe easier just to recreate them and reissue keys. The admin tool will show COs in red and I think you just perform a repair, it’s been a while but definitely try a restore to a test machine first.
