Location Property Wizard - Location By Subnet

(imported topic written by ncfb)

I have been asking for this request ever since the first update came out and broke the first version of Bigfix. I would like a change to make the Location By Subnet, the Edit settings - stay static. I have over 200 subnets and it gets real old after a while to have to right-click on Location by Subnet and go to edit range settings everytime I am looking for something.

Our name for this is “Remember range settings in tree control”.

This change unfortunately hasn’t made it into the product yet, but hopefully next version.

Ben,

the name would suggest this could be generic and hence applied to any property in any tree?

Hey Rad,

Exactly… We get this same request for locations, subnets, IP addresses, or any property that has enough results to create ranges.

Hello,

I am new to using the Location Property Wizard and could use some guidance. I came across the Kbase article below but it refers to version 5.0 (not sure if this still applies to version 6).

Basically, I would like to import a text file of subnets and corresponding locations, but it looks like the wizard is expecting a relevance expression. What’s the easiest way to setup this location property? Ideally, it would be great to just specify a subnet range even for each physical building/location, which would require less maintenance to keep up on the large list of subnets we have.

For what it’s worth, I tried using URL above anyway to export but I get an “XML parsing error” in the BES console when I try to import the computer property. I assume this URL/tool is not be valid for version 6?

Hey Frank,

That web page is no longer necessary (if you have BES 5.1+). Now the location property can easily be created inside the console by using the “Location Property Wizard” in your “Wizards” menu. It will let you copy from a file and then each client will identify the building it is in based on the subnet.

If you have more questions about the wizard, do you mind starting up a thread in the “BES Deployment” forum (more on-topic in that forum)?

Thanks,

Ben
