iTunes 10.5

(imported topic written by SystemAdmin)

I am getting ready to test the deployment of iTunes 10.5 (10.5.0.142). I reviewed the BigFix fixlet (ID 2061025) and I have some concerns:

1.) Quicktime is no longer included with iTunes since the 10.5 release:

I extracted the contents of the iTunesSetup (both x32 and 64-bit) manually and confirmed this so the fixlet is referencing a file that no longer exists. Should I bundle Quicktime 7.7 and add it to this action or keep the actions seperate?

2.) The “AppleMobileDeviceSupport”, “AppleSoftwareUpdate” and “Bonjour” MSI installers are not included with the Fixlet. Any ideas why?

I have a script and installation method for our download page that works well and I am leaning towards creating a custom Fixlet however it seems like this is a very common item and that there should be content readily available with little to no modification of the Action Script.

Any one else out there have any advice related to the iTunes 10.5 update?

Thanks,

hippman

Hi hippman,

To answer your queries:

  1. Thanks for the info. For now, you need not add it manually as msiexec.exe will terminate itself if it cannot find the msi. This will be removed. If you wish to patch QuickTime, there is a fixlet for it.

  2. For AppleSoftwareUpdate, it is not installed because it can auto-update Apple software without user’s knowledge and in some cases, it may even push unwanted software. Thus, we choose not to install it as this negates the administrator’s control over a user’s software. As for the other two, we have previously not installed them by default. We will look into that.

Thanks!

Do we just add the AppleMobileDeviceSupport and AppleSoftwareUpdate installers manually in the fixlet if needed? Thats what I did and it seemed to work okay, but not sure if that’s the preferred method.

Hi canyonRCH,

Yes, you may add those installers if you wish to.

However, as I have mentioned earlier, it may not be advisable to install AppleSoftwareUpdate as you may lose control over installing and updating of Apple software.
