Integrated Trend

(imported topic written by SystemAdmin)

Hi community,

My company is currently doing an eval of the Integrated Trend AV. I have a question about the basic Trend AV portion, not the Web protect portion. Currently we use Symantec. On each client, there is a system tray widget, that allows the user to perform a custom scan. With the integrated trend there is no such systray widget. I can find neither evidence of any client side application, nor a way to change or customize options on the BES console.

My questiosn in no particular order.

Where are the configuration options for Trend?

How do I set times for checking for and downloading new dat files?

How can I allow the end user to “see” the application?

How will they know when there is an event?

What can they see on the client side?

It seems a little broken to have no AV interface on the client.

Hi Sphear,

I’m glad to hear you are taking a look at our new solution. We are very excited about it! I hope you will enjoy the ability to manage your AV, Security, Power, Patch and other solutions from a single console. Below are answers to you questions. Let us know if you have more.

Regards,

Jesse

Where are the configuration options for Trend?

On the console side these are available through the CPM dashboard. You use the various wizards under the configuration node to generate custom configuration tasks and then target actions from those tasks to the set of machines where you would like to apply the custom configuration. You can use the options in the Take Action Dialog to dynamically apply the configurations based on criteria such as location, time, group, etc.

How do I set times for checking for and downloading new dat files?

Currently you need to do two things:

  1. Set the ‘Check server for pattern updates’ fixlet to check for updates on the server side on a regular basis (recommended once per hour). Please see the CPM deployment guide for detailed instructions.

  2. Use the pattern update wizard in the CPM dashboard to deploy the latest updates to you endpoints.

Currently issuing new pattern updates is a manual task. We will be releasing an updated version in about 8 weeks or so that will allow you to auto flow updates to the endpoints as soon as they arrive on the BES server (through the ‘check server for pattern updates’ task). If you choose to enable auto updates, you do not need to schedule clients to check in. They will be notified as soon as a new update is available and it will flow to them immediately.

How can I allow the end user to “see” the application?

There is currently no end user UI. As part of the same forthcoming update I mentioned above, you will be able to optionally enable a client side dashboard that exposes basic properties of the machine, configuration information, version information, as well as recently detected viruses/malware/spyware/grayware.

We are also set to release a patch update to the BES Client in the near future (http://forum.bigfix.com/viewtopic.php?id=3096). If your clients are upgraded to the 7.2 patch release you will be able to expose an “offer” to your end users allowing them to manually check for new pattern updates as well as run on-demand scans.

How will they know when there is an event?

Through the dashboard mentioned above.

What can they see on the client side?

Again, please see above.

Hi Sphear,

We went through the Beta process and now are almost deployed fully in our environment with CPM (workstations and servers). Have been utilizing the Trend suite through BF for several months with great success! I would be happy to chat through the forum or off-line by email or phone if you like tme o answer any questions on how the migration process has been (which by way has been amazing). It has really opened our eyes to how the previous AV product had been a rather large performance hog and it’s effect on application usage overrall (especially on servers). This has been a huge win for us in our environment (hospital).

Cheers,

Mike

Can you expand on the “offer” a bit. Does this apply to machines that already have CPM or is this for new CPM installs ?

Cheers

Hi Vern,

Offers first became available in version 7 so the offer feature is not dependent on CPM specifically. Some overview info is here:

http://support.bigfix.com/bes/changes/changes-7.0.html

Some configuration details are here:

http://support.bigfix.com/cgi-bin/kbdirect.pl?id=441

And you will find more detail in the console operator guide.

In the 7.2 patch release, we have changed the behavior of offers slightly to allow them to reappear in the offer list after they have been initially accepted. This way you can offer your end users the ability to initiate actions they may want to repeat again at a later date, for example, “Run a defrag now”.

In the CPM context, this specifically enables two feature requests. First, the ability to create a “Scan now” offer, and second the ability to ‘Check cloud for updates’ (CPM 1.5 only).

I hope that helps.

To be clear, the ‘Check cloud for updates’ feature is part of CPM 1.5 which is currently still under development. We expect to release the 1.5 content in the next couple of weeks.

The ability to create reapplicable offers is enabled by the patch release, so with the patch release and any CPM version you can create a “Scan Now” offer.
