ILMT and Oracle Linux on PCA (Private Cloud Appliance)

Hi All,

I have been asked to get ILMT running to also inventory the Oracle Linux systems that we have running in PCA. I cannot seem to find any information on how to talk to the PCA to retrieve the required information to properly compute the licenses. Has anyone done this or is it not currently supported? From what I am reading, I think it is not supported, but I hope I am missing something.

If it is not supported, has anyone heard if it will be? Also any ideas on how to set the system so that I can get more accurate licensing information?

Thanks

Martin

@TheTick At the moment, PCA is not a supported virtualization technology. Apparently, IBM is working on it. See this thread over in developerworks from this past June: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/forums/html/topic?id=83eb3ac9-7c5c-4ff8-88e0-b5ae54ae32f0&ps=25

Assuming your OEL version is supported on BigFix and ILMT, you can get the software inventory and the currently allocated virtual machine capacity via the BigFix agent and the hardware/software scanners. You’ll have to do the Sub Capacity calculations outside ILMT, since you won’t have the host information yet.

I recommend that you review the FAQs regarding Sub-Capacity: https://www-01.ibm.com/software/passportadvantage/subcapfaqov.html and in particular Questions 21 - 25.

I did see that post and was hoping for something newer :frowning: Hopefully this comes sometime soon as manually doing it is going to stink.

The FAQ does answer the questions for me, so thanks for sharing that also.

Now I just need to figure out how to use the tool, LOL

Yeah - that tool is challenging, something only an accountant could love.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I can see that there was an RFE for this created Feb 5, 2018 and the last update was Feb 7, 2018. The status is showing “Planned for Future Release”. Does anyone have any insight on when this might happen?

Here is the RFE:

Thanks,

Oracle VM Server is supported by LMT and listed as eligible virtualization technology: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/software/passportadvantage/SubCapacity/Eligible_Virtualization_Technology.pdf

Oracle Linux is supported but the PCA (Private Cloud Appliance) is not. There is no VM Manager for PCA like there is for VMware of MS Hypervisor. Without this part, we cannot get the VM host information.

Check if this will help: https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SS8JFY_9.2.0/com.ibm.lmt.doc/Inventory/admin/t_collecting_capacity_data_kvm.html

Important parts are prerequisites and Run Capacity Scan on Virtualization Hosts.
