I have received concerns from some of my users, about BigFix hanging for ~8 seconds, when trying to navigate the console GUI. Below is the solution. Note: This solution does NOT relate to action or client REPORT status. This solution is specific to the GUI delay when working in the console. This symptom only seems to happen on larger installations.
Cause: In my case, I have ~9000 servers reporting, each with ~4000 properties. That’s over 35 million records! There are about 20K Fixlets / tasks as well in my install. BigFix does a good job of making this data available quickly, but when we click on certain items, the console may hang and take several seconds to display (especially when searching for fixlets).
Solution: Do not display data you don’t NEED. Here’s how:
-
Make sure “Show non-relevant content†is turned off.
-
Navigate to “Fixlets and Tasks†in the top left corner. Right click on the “Name†of the fixlet, and de-select all properties, except “Name†.
-
Repeat for Baselines and Analyses.
-
For “Computers†, select only the properties you need.
Summary: Turning off unnecessary content properties, increases the speed of the console. Fixlet properties, especially “applicable computer count†, “Source release date”, and “Unlocked computer count”, are especially expensive to display in the console. When more properties are needed, You can turn them on and back off again. This will increase the response time of the BigFix console and prevent those irritating hangs.
Happy BigFix-ing! And thanks to the BigFix support team for helping me find the solution here.
