Heads up on maximum object ID value reached

We just ran into a nasty nasty message on anything we try in Bigfix.

“Maximum object ID value reached. Contact the BigFix support team”

If you get this someday, your world just turned upside down.

It involves L3 and DB updates to fix. Hopefully since we are 2nd customer to experience this, HCL will produce a way to detect this condition ahead of time so you don’t have downtime like we have now.

Keep any eye on your ID column in actions, if it is approaching 00-<1.6Gb value> you will be getting a surprise and you will have to contact L2/L3 to get a remote procedure ran to move to the next segment, 01-<> in this case.

L3 will be exploring alarms to show up in console or future web based do everything console app to start to warn you if this limit is being approached.

To keep this in context - MAXOBJs right now has a maximum of 1,6Gb of individual objects.
For 90% of customers this will be sufficient for many years usage.
There is a line in the BESRelay.log to show the PRE limit has been reached, which also stops further objects being used until a setting has been put in place.
There is a KB for this which I will be updating with more information on what to do and what to gather before opening a case with Support to address things…
There is also a means to extend the actions by another 1.6Gb (at this time) by running a procedure to do so, under Support guidance.
I will post the KB link once it has been updated, but prior to that please contact support immediately if you find yourself in this position.

@jbruns2017 sorry you hit this and happy that L3 was able to restabilize things.
From curiosity, did it take about 20 years of continuous BigFix operations to hit this?

No, it took less than 3 years.

Unfortunately, we have found 2 bugs since this morning. WebUI won’t show any new 01- prefixed actions unless you do some weird math to the ID and this relevance does not show the ID either:

Unfortunately far less time than that due to the extent of the usage.

Dave is telling me 1.5 million IDs used per day. 1066 days worth, 2.92 years.

Thanks for reporting. BigFix team will look into ways to reduce the impact of reaching maximum objectID.
