Fixlet to run WOL on a list of PC's?

(imported topic written by tscott91)

Is there a way I can write a fixlet to run WOL on a list of PC’s? I have a small group of test computers that I want to roll out patches to before mass rollout… I want to distribute at night via WOL.

WOL scheduling wizard works for entire subnets / choosing PC’s in each subnet but wondered if there was an easier way to just provide a list of PC’s to make this possible.

Thanks!

Hey tscott,

This is not particularly easy to do outside of a wizard. The reason being that your action must have the list of mac addresses of the computers you wish to wake up, and it must be targeted to computers that are in the same subnet as the computers you are trying to wake up. Additionally, you have to worry about the network traffic this will generate (each computer that receives this action will generate a wakeup packet for every computer to be woken up), so you must make sure your action has the appropriate guards in place.

We are currently working on a new release of power management (which will be released sometime in the coming weeks) that should take care of this problem for you. The new scheduled wake on LAN wizard will let you select computers by computer group, property results, or with a simple list. It also uses our platform integrated wake-on-LAN technology, so an action is no longer needed, an you dont have to worry about targeting computers or about network traffic.

If you still want help creating a fixlet i can offer some more details, however my suggestion would be to use the current wizard until the new release of power is available.

Zak, sounds great. I’ll keep a lookout for the new wizard…

Is this something that will automatically get installed?

Thanks, Tom

The new version of power management is very different from the current version you are using (the fundamental architecture and tracking methods have changed), so you need to add a new site to receive the new content (this way, you wont wake up one morning to see power management be compeletly different).

We’ll make an announcement on the forum when we release with more information on how to acquire and use the transition to the new power site.
