Exhange Server and Relay Security

(imported topic written by attiliof91)

I am currently working on a network that has exhange 2003 server, and there is a call for the application to send out an email, via a relay. How can I make this secure enough to protect my network?

I have many clients servers in my newtork (on private IPs 192.168.0.0), and have a relay in our DMZ, and I what I am looking to do is send out emails and not be discover and attacked by SPAM or Virus. I was looking to set up an exchange relay, or use SMTP Services running on one server, or if I have to turn this services on all servers requiring to send out an email. I do have servers running Windoes Server 2003 and Exchange 2003. Can you help me?

Hi attiliof,

The BES Web Reports (and not the clients or relays) have the capability of sending emails on a scheduled basis or “triggered” by an event. This email would be coming from your BES Server so you wouldn’t need to worry about opening up an SMTP server in your DMZ for this purpose.

Did that help answer your question?
