ESX 5.1 Agent

(imported topic written by nberger91)

I see this is supported however I cannot find a v.9.0.787.0 agent download. Is there an agent for ESX 5.1, or do we use a RHEL agent ? If so, what version ?

Hey Nick-

Starting with ESXi series of hypervisors, VMware basically clamped down on it’s operating system, making installing an actual full fledged agent on it impossible. So there’s not an actual agent available for ESXi 4, 5, and 5.1. Instead, we created a proxy agent plugin for all things ESXi, which allows us to check on it’s patch status, set the hypervisor in maintenance mode, power up VMs, take snapshots, etc.

I’m not sure how they’re marketing that product these days, but collectively the Patch Management aspect of ESXi and the part that manages the virtual machine stuff (power up power down etc) are collectively part of the Smart Cloud Patching solution back in the day. On an individual site level, they’re called “Patches for ESXi” and “Virtual Endpoint Management”.

There should be documentation floating around for what exactly these two sites can do with the proxy agent but I think infocenter has been acting up recently.

Happy Turkey Day!

Aha, makes sense now … the piece I was was missing was virtual endpoint manager which displays the data collected by the proxy.

Thanks Dex !
