Error in Client Deploy: "Microsoft Error: The network name cannot be found"

(imported topic written by lesleyajohnson76)

Hi, I am very new to BigFix. I successfully installed the console on a VM and am trying to remotely install a client on my Windows 7 laptop to test the product. After entering my computer’s IP address as a “list” install choice, I get the following error message:

Windows Error: The Network Name Cannot be Found

What is the most probable problem? Thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Can you ping the system by hostname? If not, that’s problem #1.

Generally, if you can do a net use/network share to the c$ drive on the target system, you should be able to connect to the target system from the client deploy tool without issues.

Thank you for your reply. That information helped. I still had to open all ports (0-65000) in addition to the default port of 52311. Do you know why this is, or how to get around doing this? This would obviously not be secure in a production environment.

Again, thanks for your reply and help!

Client Deploy use RPC protocol to install client on target. RPC use a range of random ports. Once your client is installed you only need keep open port 52311 if you use that one in your enviroment. Try to work with your firewall team to identify ports that client install use at install time.
