Don't show computer groups to Non admins with count of zero

(imported topic written by rharmer91)

Computer Groups is cluttered with zero object groups for people who don’t have rights to those servers.

OR - allow users to hide automatic groups they don’t want to see.

Hi Rich,

I think what you are seeing is that if a Master Operator creates a manual group, that group will be visible to all Operators even if the Operators don’t have computers in the group.

This is more or less by design, the idea is a Master Operator can create a shared group and Operators can add computers to it. They have to be able to see the group even if there are currently no computers in it so that users can begin adding computers to the group.

Automatic groups can be created in a Custom Site and shared between specific sets of operators so that not everyone needs to see the group, just the users using it. Operators also only see the groups they create.

So, you should be able to avoid this behavior if you really want to (I think).

I like the idea of being able to hide groups, this seems like a good way to resolve all the subtle details on this issue.

If master operator creates an automatic group, it’s visible by everyone as well.

If a master operator wants to have private automatic groups, they can make a new custom site to hold the group. Simply don’t make any console operators readers or writers on the custom site. Then, when you create the automatic group, create it in the custom site instead of the default ‘master operator site’.

All master operators will still be able to see the group, but that’s the way it should be. All master operators can and should be able to see everything.

Well…

I create automatic groups to give rights to my application teams. You are suggesting that I create a new site for each application team then? I have like 30 different application teams.

I think I’d rather just have them hide the groups they don’t want to see (that have 0 in them)

Yes, the ability to hide groups is a good idea.

Still, you could create the 30 custom sites and put your groups in them in just a couple of minutes if you really desired this behavior. I know at least one BigFix deployment that is using over 300 custom sites…

How to create an automatic group which begins with “CM” only and that will not include “CM” in the middle?

Hey Jim,

Can you post this as a new topic? I think this is not the right forum or thread for this question.

Thanks,

Ben
