Does BigFix support the Amazon Linux AMI?

My company is looking to replace SCCM and we’re in the process of evaluating BigFix for patching. We maintain a large number of virtual instances based on the AWS Linux AMI (based on RHEL) and was wondering if anyone else has had problems patching this type of system/OS?

Is it supported by BigFix?

Hello!

AWS Linux AMI has a goal of being binary compatible with RHEL so you should be able to install the BigFix Agent on the server – you’ll definitely want to test this though.

My understanding is that amazon provides custom packages and patches for AMI and provides a custom YUM repository where these updates are provided from.

Assuming the BigFix agent will run on AMI linux you can create any content you want and you can piggy back off yum in your fixlets. That being said, and maybe someone else can chime in, it’s unlikely that the linux patches provided by IBM will work without modification.

We’ve successfully installed the BigFix agent on a few non-production instances based on the AWS AMI and it does work. However, I think you’re right about the IBM curated patch compatibility. We have not had any luck subscribing the instances to a site that contains patches provided by IBM. Bummer.

Hi Steve, saw the RFE you have submitted. Putting the link to it here in case others would like to upvote it:
