I am in the middle of planning on upgrading from version 9.0.8 to version 9.2.6. Currently we do not have DSA deployed. The question is, can i deploy new version on the “would-be” DSA server and replicate with the existing server (still at version 9.0.8)?
I understand the change of the architecture to 64 bit and it might not be possible for the above scenario. Is there any experts here to help giving me some recommendation? Please kindly advise, thanks!
It’s not possible to install a new DSA server at a different version than the master server because replication will not occur between two different version servers. If the replica was already in place, you could certainly upgrade one before the other, but you will not replicate anything between them as long as they remain at different versions, so you should upgrade the other server soon after the first one is upgraded.
If you were going to set up DSA, then you would do so at version 9.0.8 so that you would have 2 roots running that version, then upgrade one of them, make sure things work, then upgrade the other.
In addition to matching the version of the BigFix server application; it is also recommended that you match the OS platform version, database version, and hardware specifications of the machine (CPU, memory, disk) for each machine as well. The two machines should be as identical as possible to reduce potential issues.
Also, DSA isn’t really needed if you have good backups and practice DR on a regular basis.
If the root server goes down, most things already in place will continue to function on the client side, particularly in the case of policy actions that control configuration and similar items that don’t involve downloads. Items that do involve downloads that are already cached on relays or clients will actually work as well. The root server is only required to do new things or stop existing things.
I personally consider 48hrs minimum to recovery acceptable in most cases.
