Default Web Browser irregularities

(imported topic written by gjeremia91)

I’ve seen a few instances where the reporting of the default web browser does not seem to be inline with what the computer thinks. I am wondering if anyone else has seen this.

You can see my settings in the attached graphic should have default web browser reported as firefox. Instead it is reported as IE. Once I changed it to Mozilla Firefox, using “%SystemRoot%\system32\control.exe appwiz.cpl,3,” then it reported the correct value, but there is obviously some inconsistency somewhere perpetrated by either Microsoft, Mozilla or incorrectly read by BigFix…

I’d appreciate it if anyone else could validate this by looking for systems running firefox, where firefox reports itself as the default but the relevance “default web browser” is set to something other than “firefox”.

I think our default web browser application is considered the application associated with .html files… Are these the same on your system?

q: name of default web browser
A: iexplore.exe

q: name of application of key “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.html” of registry
A: iexplore.exe
