Creating a Windows reference image to capture in IEM for deployment

I’m working on learning IEM’s process for Bare Metal Imaging. I read through the IBM “OSD v3.5 User’s Guide” and started a test run of the image creation process.

I walked through all the setup steps to setup my “OS Deployment and Bare Metal Imaging” site and then started the process of creating a Windows image. From the “Bundle and Media Manager dashboard” I’ve completed the following actions:

  • I installed the MDT Bundle Creator from IEM to a target machine
  • Created an MDT Bundle from my MDT Bundle Creator machine
  • Uploaded my MDT Bundle to the IEM server

My next step is to create a reference image but IEM doesn’t seem to provide any guidance on this. In a Microsoft MDT Deployment, normally I would upload the source files (.wim or .iso), drivers, and software to my Deployment workbench and then create a task sequence to deploy the OS to a “Reference Computer”. Next I would customize the reference computer and then “Capture” the final image back to my MDT workbench.

In IEM I have found good documentation about creating the MDT Bundle, which is used for capturing an image, and about capturing the image… but what about creating it?

So, MY QUESTION IS: Does IEM provide any tasks, actions, or utilities for creating a Windows “Reference Image” or do I just create my Windows “Reference Image” outside of what IEM provides, (using the same Microsoft methods I’ve used in the past), and then run the IEM capture process?

(I guess that as I was reading through the OSD guide, I thought the MDT Bundle I created was somehow going to help with deploying an OS to my Reference computer so I could build a Reference Image and then capture it.)

Create your reference image as you normally would. Install the IEM agent. Then follow the instructions in this article: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21505996

That’s what I figured from reading the IBM documentation. Thanks for the confirmation!
