Reason for Update:

  • You need to accept the license terms to install Microsoft Exchange Server. BigFix is working on a workaround to install the fixlet, until then the fixlet remains as Audit only.
  • Microsoft has only changed only the name of some of the preview .NET updates with no Binary changes, we have superseded the old Preview updates.
  • Relevance has been changed for [ID:501656829],[ID:501656825],[ID:501217039] and [ID:501217039]
  • New updates for .Net Framework from Microsoft

Actions to Take:

you guys messed up a large majority of these NEW fixlets as they have a July release date instead of August.

I have opened a support Case: CS0336765

Maybe, but it’s difficult to express the complexity in a couple of metadata fields. As is kind of customary, Microsoft released a lot of the .NET Framework updates last month under the titles “Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework”.

This month, those Previews have changed to “Cumulative Update for .NET Framework”, under the same KB numbers and with the same, unmodified binaries they released last month.

In the past, we often did not release new fixlets based on the KB article titles changing, but this presents a problem where customers are making decisions to exclude “Preview” updates from deployment, or Globally Hide the “Preview” fixlets and then they remain hidden after changing from “Preview” to “normal” updates.

Open to suggestions on the right way to approach these, but it’s not as simple as “the release dates are wrong”

one example is as follows:

*Major [ID:501573302 ] 5015733: Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows Server 2022 - Windows Server 2022 - .NET Framework 3.5/4.8 - KB5015733 (x64)

source release date is 7/19/2022

Actual release info if you look up the KB article:

MS Reference for that particular KB is as follows:

August 9, 2022-KB5015733 Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Microsoft server operating system version 21H2
.NET
Release Date:
August 9, 2022

Please don’t tell me we are dropping “Preview” from the naming!? we don’t install Preview fixlets.

We globally hide all preview content

Yes, but…
https://catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=5015733

The same KB with the same binary was also released in July

No, we’re not - that’s the change.
The “Preview” fixlets have been marked Superseded, new Fixlets have been published as July’s “Preview” turned into August’s “Update”, but the KB number and download binary is the same as the July preview release.

my suggestion then would be as follows:

if MS makes no changes to a preview’s binaries, then you superseded the preview using the same download link, publish a new fixlet with a non-preview name with the new release date even if it uses the same binaries, this way you don’t confuse the crap out of everyone unintentionally. So essentially follow the same process you would if the binaries did change, that way you are consistent across the board

I was scratching my head for two days, wondering why some .NET Framework updates showed up for Aug and others didn’t, until I searched for KB#

Hi ,
Whenever MS re-releases updates with same binaries, we have followed a similar process as mentioned by you. In this case, I think the release date was not updated. You can expect the changes shortly.
