Client CPU setting- policy (question)

(imported topic written by louspag91)

We would like to set a policy to have all managed servers use 5% cpu for the client. I’m aware of how to do this but I have a question. Should the BES servers be excluded or will they know enough not to accept the policy?

The relays I would like to leave in so they can benefit with a litle more performance as well.

What are your thoughts on the BE servers?

Thanks

The BigFix Server tends not to be CPU-bound (it is more disk-bound) so I don’t think this would interfere with BigFix Server performance…

But I am curious why you are raising the CPU… are the agents slow to get work done?

Ben,

We have been concerned with the amount of time the clients take to report in and process workload. Our baselines are large by even BigFix standards and our internal packages are process intensive. Now we are working towards patching Solaris servers and from my initial testing the deployment of a cluster (bundle) can takes up-to 3 hours on some servers and 1+ hours on others. When I changed the cpu to 5% the same deployments took a lot less time. Based on our change window 4 hours to patch is not enough if the patches themselves can take up to 3 hours.

Thanks, Lou. BigFix 8.0 agents are more efficient so hopefully that will help when the next version is released. Note that if you are not already using “efficient mime”, you should definitely switch for a very large agent performance boost. http://support.bigfix.com/cgi-bin/kbdirect.pl?id=420
