Continuing my BigFix journey…
I noticed our OSD server wasn’t synced and so I attempted to push out the Server Sync fixlets from the Server Management tab.
In the first fixlet which fails, Restart Bare Metal Server Services, it references an updateidlescheme.log which I looked into. I looked into it and saw these errors:
After some googling and checking our other OSD server from a different environment, I noticed that the sql server service isn’t running that was installed with all of the rest of the OSD requirements. I tried starting it but it wouldn’t start. Looked at the ERRORLOG for sql and got this:
What I find interesting is that it’s trying to open from a weird location - E:\sql12_main_t.obj.x86Release which of course doesn’t exist. I looked at the service to see where it’s supposed to be pulling from, and it shows that the startup parameter is from the C:\ drive.
Anyone have experience with this? It feels like I’m going down a rabbit hole.

it seems to be a problem related to the SQL server that corrupts some paths. Some forums describes how to recover that. It seems to occur also after a restart and not only on a fresh installation.

If it’s your case you can try to fix the issue as described or reinstall the bare metal server, including the SQL server EXPRESS, after completely uninstalling it (uninstall button from bare metal server dashboard, run fixlet 134 “Bare Metal Server Cleanup…”, restart the computer, reinstall the bare metal server)

Ran through the uninstall and Server Cleanup fixlets, restarted, and began installing the OSD server again. All fixlets were completing successfully until the Perform Post-Install Tasks where it failed. Looking at it, it references the updateidlescheme.log.

it cannot connect to the database. Could you please check that the service “BigFix TCP to ODBC gateway” is running?
Could you please also check the database logs? Folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\Log, files ERRORLOG*

I double checked and that service is running. The SQL service is running but I had to manually create the Auto Deploy database using sqlcmd. I’m now getting the following from the ERRORLOG:
Not sure why it’s giving me a login failure. The sql install that’s part of the fixlet never prompts to create a user account or anything like that.
The service will be using the LocalSystem account. If you install SQL Express or create the database manually, LocalSystem probably doesn’t have a login or doesn’t have database rights.

if you had to create the AutoDeploy ODBC source manually, when the SQL version has been installed together with the bare metal server install (and not already present before), I think something went wrong during the installation.
Did you run the cleanup fixlet before reinstalling?
Could you please also check the install logs of the database server? They are in the folder "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\120\Setup Bootstrap\Log"

I was able to use sqlcmd to allow multi users and from there I was able to windows auth into SSMS. From there, I added ‘NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM’ as well as a few other logins since it was barren prior.
ERRORLOG now shows no errors and now says "Starting up database ‘AutoDeploy’ " so that’s great.
The Perform Post-Install Tasks fixlet will now continue down and fail on this portion:
The thing I’m seeing though is that in both the updateidlescheme.log and updatebehaviors.log there still a weird ODBC connection error:
And at the bottom of both, it says “Invalid RbAgent command: rad-updatebehaviors” (or idlescheme).
I’ll continue troubleshooting of course, I just felt like sharing the update.
Hi, it seems that the tables have not been correctly created. Still issues connecting to the database.

There are several different logs that can be generated depending upon where the cation is failing.
First use the Bare Metal Servers dashboard to attempt a Full Sync. If that fails, post the action History, rather than the ActionScript, so we can see which step is failing and direct you to the correct log.
Or open a support incident, where they can help you look through the logs.

The issue got resolved after upgrading OS Deployment server to latest version.
