Hi,
I’m trying to use Tivoli Endpoint Manager Systems Lifecycle to deploy Windows 2003, 2008, and 2008 R2, but I don’t really know if that’s possible.
Can anyone please confirm?

Hi,
you’ll need to use the TPMfOSD module to do that; it should be accessible through your Passport Portal.

Jack,
What do you mean by my ‘Passport Portal’? Do you mean IBM Passport Advantage? I have looked through the BigFix License Overview section in the TEM Conosle, but don’t see anything like TPMfOSD. I am the admin for the TEM server that adelfino is writing about.

TPMfOSD (Tivoli Provisioning Manager for OS Deployment) is a seperate component from the TEM server infrastructure. The TPMfOSD allows for bare metal imaging and more advanced deployment than what is currently in the TEM OS Deployment. The TEM OS deployment is more for user migrations from XP to Vista/Win7 as well as reimages of workstations that are currently up and working with the TEM server.
TPMfOSD does allow for Server OS builds and should be available to any System Lifecycle owners from the IBM Passport Advantage site. It does require its own infrastructure to store/deploy images but depending on your relays may be able to be installed on the same device.
I just recently started looking into the TPMfOSD solution and it is a full blown imaging solution where TEM could be though of as TPMfOSD Lite.

Hi,
just to clarify … I’m understanding that there is no way to do OSP for Servers using TEM (for any OS Server version like 2003, 2008, etc), only for Workstations and Windows XP, Vista and 7 OS versions… is that correct? In case that it’s not correct, what would be the module for TEM that would allow to do a server provisioning?
Thanks.

I dont think TEM can do any server provisioning, you definately cannot use the Capture Images Wizard to upload a server build as it specifies the OS Architecture. You might be able to take a custom WIM file and import to the Image Library but I am guessing part of the initial import analyze would be an OS check. Someone from team IBM would need to verify that server OS is not supported (I dont see it clearly in the OS Deployment v2.0 Users Guide).
edit: after looking at the User’s Guide it says in the Introduction section “quickly deploy new workstations and servers” however the System Requirements show that it supports only XP, Vista, 7 (32 and 64 bit)
Users Guide: http://support.bigfix.com/product/documents/OSD/OSD_Users_Guide.pdf
sorry if my answer is clear as mud

You’d have to stop the action group and insert your own license type settings too, and there’s no way to manage complex provisioning tasks like configuring a RAID controller or HBA card. TEM OSD is designed for Windows 7 migration, not data center automation.

Not to threadjack but…
Are there any other “Extras” that someone entitled to the “System Lifecycle” has access to - like the TPMfOSD (Tivoli Provisioning Manager for OS Deployment) solution? Was this communicated to current customers?

does anyone know if there are plans to include OSP for Server editions (2003, 2008) to TEM? … If that’s the case, any expected date for that?
Thanks!

I forgot to add something else:
Is it planned to offer a subscription to TPMfOSD with TEM since it’s not supporting OSD for server editions? I would appreciate any information related to licenses and offering referring this issue.

TPMfOSD (Tivoli Provisioning Manager for Operating System Deployment) is bundled with TEM-LM (Tivoli Endpoint Manager Lifecycle Management) as of version 8.1 – you just need to download from Passport Advantage.
