I am currently running BigFix v7.2.4.60 on my BigFix Infrastructure (central server and relay servers) and a mix of clients at v7.2.5.22, 7.2.4.60, and some older clients. My question is can I upgrade the clients to v8.x (to take advantage of some of the new inspectors) while leaving the Infrastructure at v7.2.4.60? Or does v8.x require all Infrastructure components to be upgraded first? I know the “recommendation” would be to upgrade Infrastructure first, however, will I run into any technical issues?
We try to make it so that you can run with the +1 agent versions (e.g., 8.0 agents with 7.2 relay/server) so that you can take advantage of newly released agents or inspectors without needing to upgrade your infrastructure… and I believe it is part of our formal test plan (I will double-check on that)… But… as you mentioned, we don’t recommend it because this configuration gets the least amount of testing… and in the past, it has been the source of some strange bugs.
So I would say you can try it… but do it cautiously… and strongly consider upgrading your server first…
