BigFix to set NIC option

(imported topic written by jamieorth91)

Can BigFix set the option for a NIC to “Only allow management stations to bring the computer out of standby.”? There is a tast “Set Wake-from-Standby by Magic Packet Settings - Windows XP/Vista” but it does not check the option I am looking for.

The Wake from Standby options in the Power Management are great, but we would like the option to manually wake up (by using WOL packets) machines that are in standby. We have a time set to wake up but thats at 1 am for patches, etc.

Hey Jamie,

As a quick recap to make sure we are on the same page:

  • For each network adapter, you have the option of the setting “Allow this device to bring the computer from standby” – This means the computer can be woken from standby using the WoL packet or any other directed network traffic.
  • The next option “Only allow management stations to bring computer out of standby” is a confusing way of saying “only allow WoL packets to wake from standby” (so other types on network traffic won’t wake up the computer).
  • Our Task in the BigFix Power Management site: “Set Wake-from-Standby by Magic Packet Settings - Windows XP/Vista” should set both checkboxes for you.

Ok, thanks for the response Ben. If the task “Set Wake from Standby by Magic Packet Settings - Windows XP/Vista” is supposed to set both then I have some Dell’s where it is only checking the “Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby” and not the “only allow management…” box. The task completes and doesn’t indicate that it failed. Could it be possible that the “allow this device” box is already checked (I haven’t verified this yet, but I am going to test shortly) and so it doesn’t look to check the other box?

Thanks Ben!!!

Hey Jamie,

I believe we found and addressed an issue where sometimes the second box wouldn’t be checked properly. If you want to try the Task again, it should work.

Thanks,

Ben

Does the Power Management site: “Set Wake-from-Standby by Magic Packet Settings - Windows XP/Vista” task still exist? I can’t find it. I do have an “Enable Wake-from-Standby by Magic Packet - Windows XP” that seems to set both checkboxes but the relevance is only for XP not Vista. I’ve checked all tasks hidden or otherwise. Am I missing something?

I think this is now called:

“Enable Wake-from-Standby by Magic Packet - Windows XP”

Bringing this back from the dead. Does BigFix have a way to set the same settings under Windows 7? Looking through the Power Management site of BES 8, I’m not seeing anything in the power management site.

Looks like BigFix published updated Power Fixlets that now support Windows 7. Thanks!

The new fixlets are called:

Enable Wake-from-Standby by Magic Packet - Windows XP/Vista/Win7

Disable Wake-from-Standby by Magic Packet - Windows XP/Vista/Win7

Guys, I use this option on my Computers, two test on Lenovo Pc´s. This computers have 4 WOL Options:

Activate on direct Packet

Activate on Magic Packet

Activate on Magic Packet from shut Down State

Activate on link

When we send Enable Magic Packet to my testing computer, this enable the option “Activate on Magic Packet from shut Down State” and not “Activate on Magic Packet” that suppose is for activate from standby state.

Any help about it?

Hi MarlonRojas. Looks like your best option would be to use the “Activate on Magic Packet from Shut Down” state. From what I gather, it’s one level higher than “Activate on Magic Packet” and should work in standby state.

Does it work also on WoL? That could cross-check if the either or both options work.
