I have two workstations sitting next to me that are configured to be relays, and in the console it shows both computers have the relay service installed and running. In the console I can see hundreds of workstations using one of the computers as a relay, but none are using the second computer. The first relay was also accidentally turned off one night and computers still did not use the second relay.
Is there anything I should check or configure to get some computers using the second relay I have setup?
I am able to ping both computers. Both computers also have the Windows XP firewall turned on but TCP/UDP 52311 has been configured via domain group policy to be open on them. Telnet also tries to connect if I telnet to either one using port 52311. Thanks.
Check the “DNS Name” property of the computer. That is what is used by default to contact the computer. It sounds like maybe this name isn’t resolvable.
For the DNS Name property it has the computer name listed and appears correct, with my comparing computer settings with the computer next to it that I have also configured to be a relay. However, in “BES Client Relay Status” the working computer has a computer name listed there, while the one that isn’t working has an IP address and it is not the address of the computer.
What would the best way be to fix this setting? I have checked on our DNS servers that the IP address there is the correct one that the workstation is using.
There is a task under the Bes Support site “BES Relay Setting: Name Override” which will allow you to have your relays use the IP instead of the DNS name. We had to implement this setting in our deployment as we have multiple domains/workgroup machines/etc… that could not resolve the DNS name and we were able to get proper relay communication using the IP address instead.
Not to overstate the obvious, but do you have your workstations to automatically select relay’s or are they set to manual? They may have registered with the first relay if set to manual. Just a thought, and hope it helps.
We have the workstations automatically selecting relays.
I also located “BES Relay Setting: Name Override” in the support site. It looks like I can try it on just this relay since the others appear to be working. I wanted to ensure I can use it for just this relay so I won’t affect the ones that are working?
The “BES Relay Setting: Name Override” task took care of the problem, the relay computer is now being used by other computers on the network. Thanks for the help.
If I deploy some relays and then use TEM deploy tool, is client send all over the network for each computer or is taken from relay using the shortest path over network?
