Rebooted the application server and ran upgrade. Still got a RC=41.

Still no movement on https:bigfix-ideas.hcltechsw.com/ideas/BFINV-I-452

Same thing happened with patch 4.

We understand that this is a pain point for our users. We are currently reviewing the installation process and plan to release improvements in the near future. This idea will be addressed in the next stage, and the Idea Portal will be updated accordingly once it is ready.

Additionally, we will be working with you through the support case to better understand the specifics of your scenario and identify what triggers this situation.

I noticed that when I ran the manual installation that it hung up on the step : Backing up the (server directory?) Step 3. Its making moving the wlp folder from program files\ibm\bfi\ and renaming it with the old version. I tried manually moving it and I noticed that it bombed when it got to a certain spot due to the pathname getting too long. I would imagine the automated version gets the same result. There are a ton of subfolders of subfolders of subfolders. I can see 10 levels in one folder. Maybe this is not the issue in everyone’s case, but it definitely is in mine. This is the first time I have ever had any issue with BFI upgrades in the past three years I have been doing them.

I can confirm seeing the same issue with being unable to move/rename the wlp folder when I applied 10.0.5 on my lab server.

Hello,
Our BFI team are actively looking into the permissions issue. I also had the same upgrade issue in my lab some time back, where creating backup of wlp folder was failing. I also had the issue with long file names. I use the following work arounds, if you are willing to try. Hope these will help.

  1. Update the Registry or Group Policy to allow LongPathsEnabled
Modify or Create the LongPathsEnabled Key Locate the LongPathsEnabled entry. If it doesn’t exist, create it: Right-click on the right pane, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it LongPathsEnabled. Double-click on LongPathsEnabled and set its value to 1.

For group policy management, enable “Enable Win32 long paths” under: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Filesystem

  2. The creating backup issue usually happens if any Service monitoring tool is running and will try to automatically start the BFI service during the upgrade. For this backup creation issue:
Stop BFI service, update service startup to manual mode and run upgrade fixlet or follow the manual upgrade process
Once the upgrade is complete, set the service back to Automatic
Upgrading to BigFix Inventory version 10.0.1 fails with error code 1: Access is denied on step 3 "Backup the Server Directory" - Customer Support
