BigFix Contest: "How did you BigFix IT?" (Win a Nintendo Wii!)

(imported topic written by BenKus)

Our BigFix community is growing quite strong with the company growth and all the forum activity. We thought it would be fun to hold a contest to see who has used BigFix in interesting and effective ways.

Entries will be evaluated by:

  • The most innovative way BigFix is used to prevent or solve a problem.
  • The highest ROI tied to the use of BigFix Technology.
  • The most versatile solution that can be shared and mirrored across the globe.

To enter, simply send an email to

Tracey_Abby@BigFix.com

with a description of how BigFix was used and any details that help describe the situation.

A winner from each coast will be chosen and both will get a new Nintendo Wii! More details are here:

(Note that BigFix employees are not allowed to participate, but since many of us can’t seem to find any stores with Nintendo Wii’s in stock, we are quite jealous.)

We know that people find lots of great uses for BigFix in their organizations and it should only take a few minutes to send a quick description of the cool things you have done so please spend a few minutes and you might get a Wii.

Feel free to post or send us questions,

Ben

Thanks to everyone who has entered so far… We have had some good entries around dealing with nagging compliance audits, fixing serious issues, and helping contain virus outbreaks…

Please note that you can enter multiple times…

We wanted to post a clarification because I think some people were not sending us good stories due to concerns around the privacy of their data:

We will not use your company’s name or your name publicly upon request and you can still be eligible to win the Nintendo Wii. We will publish the story of the winner, but it won’t offer any identifiable information about you or your company.

For instance, here is a submission (slightly edited to remove identifiable info) that we got from an Energy company with somewhere around 20,000 BES Agents:

“For a few years we have been experiencing an issue with some custom software we use in our call centers. The problem was that the configuration settings seemed to randomly change to their default settings, which made the call center operator unable to login to the software until the help-desk fixed the problem. No one was able to find the problem in the software so the issue persisted for 2 years and the help-desk received several calls a day about this issue from the call centers all around the country who told the operators how to adjust their registry to fix the problem (often a difficult and time consuming task). After learning the BigFix Relevancy language in a day, I was able to make a Fixlet that detected the improper configuration and set back to the proper configuration. After some testing, I applied the fix as a policy action and ever since then our problems have gone away. We still don’t know why the problem occurs, but we no longer need to waste money with the software consultants to try to fix the problem. We don’t have an exact estimate of how much money was saved in call center/help desk labor over the year, but some people estimate it is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

On a slightly more important note, some of the people at BigFix were finally able to acquire a Nintendo Wii (I am still waiting for one to become available somewhere: http://www.outtastock.com/wii/) and it is very cool. Even the crappy built-in sports games are cool. If any of you enjoy game consoles or have children, the Nintendo Wii is definitely one of the more exciting consoles on the market today (we can start up another forum thread if any one wants to argue  ).

So keep those submissions coming and let us know if you want to keep the name confidential! Don’t be shy!
