BES license expiration

(imported topic written by ononcg91)

What specifically happens when BES license expires?

(imported comment written by BenKus)

If you agents license expires, your agents will go into “Restricted Mode”, which is essentially a non-functioning agent. The will still report, but they will report all their Fixlets/Tasks FALSE, they won’t take actions from Fixlets, the Analyses will stop reporting, custom actions/Fixlets/Tasks won’t work.

Thank you Ben, but I am bit confused by the term “agent license”.

I was under impression that all BES licensing was managed by the “masthead.afxm” file with

the “LicenseExpiration” parameter governing the expiration date.

Yes… we are talking about the same thing…

Very curious behaviour regarding expiration date.

Here is an excerpt of the BigFix “masthead.axfm” file which governs licensing:

LicenseExpiration: 15 Dec 2008 09:45:56 GMT

As of this reply BigFix is still fully functional.

Is there a grace period from the expiration date?

BES Deployment Health Check results for “License Expiration”:

License Expiration Date: Mon, 15 Dec 2008 01:45:56 -0800

Days Left: -2

Yes… What version are you running… If it is 6.0, you have 30 days… If it is 7.0+, you have 1 day, which means that you should start seeing your agents go into expiration now.

Still fully functional.

BES was initially setup with version 6 and has been updated to current over the 2 years it has

been deployed. The licensing expiration grace period may be grandfathered under the terms for

version 6.

BTW there is a fixlet that tests for licensing, “BES Clients Restricted by License Expiration - BES 7.0”

which is relevant for all clients.

(imported comment written by ononcg91)

It is expired. Deployment of task results in error with the following status:

"This computer is not licensed.

Status

Start Time Not Executed

End Time Not Executed"

Analysis appears to be working.

You will quickly see that your Analyses will be marked “not relevant” for everything but the BES Support site… So you are about to lose functionality of those as well…

It sounds like you are well overdue for a license extension… May I ask if this is part of your plan or not?

Note that your BigFix contract has details on what you are and are not allowed to do with the system after your license has expired. This may be a more restrictive set than what the product enforces and you should check on that.

Ben,

In regards to this error.

I am seeing this fixlet message on our BES server for one of our clients.

“BES Clients Restricted by License Expiration - BES 7.0”

We are running 7.2.5.22 on our server and the client that this fixlet is reporting on is running 7.2.5.22.

I looked in the log files on this client and it is reporting correctly.

Any suggestions…

Hey Phil,

Sounds like your license expired… Check your health checks dashboard…

License is fine

License Expiration Date: Fri, 22 Oct 2010 18:00:00 -0600

Days Left: 275

(imported comment written by BenKus)

Is the clock accurate on this computer?

Ben

Spoke with the admin of the systems, and he stated that the time and date on both systems are correct.

Next steps are to make a property to check what the client is thinking… See here:
