BES Clients migration from relay win server 2012 to Bigfix 11

Dear Forum Guys,

In May 2024 we migrated our installation of Bigfix 10 to Bigfix 11.

However some computers (230 PCs) are still disconnected from our Root server. The 230 computers have been connected to an old relay since may 2024. The relay version is 10.0.8.37 and the problem is the relay is running over a windows 2012 R2 OS which is not supported by Bigfix 11.

My request for help is how can I migrate those 230 computer to a new relay, actually to connect to the Bigfix Root server

Thanks in advance,
Guido.

That’s an interesting problem.
The most straightforward way, to avoid visiting the 230 computers individually, would probably be to have another relay take over the DNS name and IP address of the 2012 relay.

If you’re at “all defaults”, where the relay Name was used to connect, you would just update DNS, add a CNAME alias to direct the original relay’s name to the name of another working relay on the same network.

If you were using name overrides or IP addresses to connect to the relay, you may need to build a new relay on that IP address (and shut down the 2012 relay of course to prevent IP conflict)

Come to think of it, if these clients have a path to reach directly to the root (allowed by routing/firewall), then you could just turn off the 2012 Relay. Next time the clients perform a Relay Selection (12 hours by default) they should failover back to the root server.

Hi Jason,

First of all, thanks for your help.

DNS Overwrite wouldn’t be an option because that server (where the relay is) is used with other applications.

It could be to turn off the relay on a weekend for 12 hours to simulate a failover. On the 230 computers the client relay settings are 1) selection method: manual, 2) primary relay: win server 2012 (our problem) 3) secondary relay: other relay but the version is bigfix 11, however our target relay server is the root server. My question is if I can change those relay client settings (without connection between root server and win 2012 relay)?

In other words is there any settings task which I can trigger from the win 2012 relay? Currently, the network is open between the computers and the root server and the relay bigfix 11

Thanks for everything,

Guido.
