Curious, Is anyone using the ability in various cloud providers to auto scale their BigFix relays. For example, say you are a retailer and this time of year you auto scale a bunch of webserver for your ecommerce business. Maybe to handle the load you could also auto scale your relays?
I’ve thought about this before too and the idea makes sense but I think the challenge is you would need to identify instance metrics (active TCP connections, CPU usage, etc) that are a sign the relay is reaching its max and I don’t think that exists. The limit of 5,000 clients/Relay could be reached and the relay instance could still have sufficient system resources.
Through automation you could query BigFix to determine how many clients/relay there are and then deploy more Relay instances as needed and then scale back. If you build such a thing, I’d like to see it shared on https://github.com/bigfix !
