Are Teams updates to be found in BigFix?

Just wondering, I never see Teams update in the Patches for Windows site so is it part of the Office 365 installs or is it a case of do your own thing? I’m, obviously, not that familiar with Office/Teams so apologies if it is a dumb question!

Teams is a shit application to update. There are 2 versions of teams

Teams installed by the user : this will be installed in the profile for the user and will be automaticly updated.

Teams installed by O365 or with the machine wide installer msi : This installs the machine wide installer in C:\Program Files (x86)\Teams Installer , as soon as an user logs in it will install it in the user profile for the user and this will be updated without problems.

The problem is that the machine wide installer can NOT be updated apart from completly uninstalling and installing it again if you look around the internet there are multiple topics pointing to that https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/257211/upgrading-teams-machine-wide-installer.html https://petri.com/set-up-microsoft-teams-using-machine-wide-installer#Updating_the_Microsoft_Teams_machine-wide_installer https://github.com/microsoft/TeamsMsiOverride

Now the problem that the teams machine wide installer doesnt update itself arrises when a user logs in that doesnt have teams installed in his profile yet. Then teams tries to install from the old teams machine wide installer which fails because the installer is too old. It will never get trough the setup. This is a serieus design flaw imo. If you have users with their own laptop this wont be an issue, but with desktops which get rotated between users this will be an issue.

i’ve been breaking my neck over this but couldnt get anything reliable working.

i’ve tried

  • just overwriting the .exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\Teams Installer
  • uninstallin with the uninstall string in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and reinstalling the problem that arises there is that the uninstall string in my case MsiExec.exe /I{731F6BAA-A986-45A4-8936-7C3AAAAA760B} doesnt uninstall teams at all

if you look at this https://petri.com/set-up-microsoft-teams-using-machine-wide-installer#Updating_the_Microsoft_Teams_machine-wide_installer

they also talk about

  1. Remove teams
  2. reinstall teams
